Taraxaca House History

Taraxaca House is a quiet retreat open year-round, available for short or extended stays, with a full digital studio and silkscreen print shop on-site. We publish small works, such as prints and books, in a forum for established and emerging artists. Relax and enjoy reading, writing, drawing or painting — or take a tour of Winnipeg's renowned arts and cultural community!

Formerly known as the headquarters of the Red River Catfish Preservation Society, it's a popular place for artists and art lovers to gather and decompress, away from the daily grind, yet only a stone's throw from a vibrant urban centre.

Val Huffman, your Host and Tour Guide

Meet Your Host and Happy Tour Guide

Val Huffman is a writer, photographer and graphic artist, well-known in Winnipeg's arts and cultural community. He is semi-retired and always happy to meet new people, show them around town or help them to get new projects underway.

He maintains a large collection of local art, some of it is always on rotational display throughout the house, and you can usually find him working on projects — outdoors in all seasons, or indoors when the weather gets stormy.

Taraxaca House, looking out from the Back Dandelion Wine

Homemade dandelion wine is a family tradition. We serve a glass to all visitors whenever it's available.

We use the dandelions from our yard, which is free of pesticides, herbicides and other stuff you don't want.

The taste of dandelion wine is rich, golden and warming, more like a good brandy than a wine. We've had friends who don't normally like wine comment that they do enjoy this “spring tonic.”

** Suggested Donations for accommodation and/or services can be made in CAD, or (if available) units of volunteer labour at 10 units per hour, or any combination of both.
